Matthew Bailey

Founder & Lead Developer

Matthew founded Birds of a Feather Developers after years of building enterprise software for companies across West Michigan. His experience spans everything from line-of-business applications to consumer mobile apps to cloud architecture.

Background

Matthew's path into software development wasn't traditional — and that's what makes him good at what he does. After five years working his way up through technical support at a grocery distribution company, he found himself troubleshooting the very application his team relied on daily. He started identifying bugs, mapping out edge cases, and realizing he wanted to be the one fixing them.

That drive led him to Udacity, where he earned a Google-sponsored scholarship for Android development — selected as one of 5,000 out of 100,000 applicants. He finished the nine-month program in under five, became a mentor to fellow students, and earned a second scholarship for the advanced program.

With certificates in hand, he stepped into the role of his company's sole app developer and spent the next two and a half years modernizing their mobile platform. In 2022, he made the leap to a startup, then continued growing his skills across the full .NET ecosystem — Xamarin, .NET MAUI, ASP.NET Core, Blazor, and Azure.

Today, that experience powers Birds of a Feather Developers. Matthew brings a rare combination: someone who understands business operations from the inside and can translate that knowledge into software that actually solves problems.

Outside the Code

Matthew has been married since 2012 and is a proud dad of four. In 2024, the family traded the Grand Rapids suburbs for a two-acre hobby farm in Hamilton, MI — complete with fruit trees, berry bushes, a vegetable garden, and a dedicated home office built out during renovations.

When he's not coding, you'll find him playing Destiny with his oldest, building in Minecraft with his younger boys, or gathered around the table for family game night. The household favorites: Wingspan, Risk, Catan, and Cascadia.

Philosophy

Matthew believes in writing clean, maintainable code and communicating clearly with clients. No jargon, no unnecessary complexity — just software that works and solves real problems.
